There are festivals… and then there are festivals where the VIP guests have four paws, wagging tails, and absolutely no concern for personal space.
Welcome to the Frankenmuth Dog Bowl, a free, family-friendly festival in Michigan’s Little Bavaria that proudly calls itself the world’s largest Olympic-style festival for dogs. The 2026 event takes place May 23 and 24 at Frankenmuth River Place Shops, with Balloons Over Bavarian Inn happening the same weekend from May 22 through 25.
And yes, it is exactly as fun as it sounds.

A Festival Built for Dogs — and the People Who Love Them
Started in 2008, Frankenmuth Dog Bowl has grown into a high-energy weekend full of running, jumping, diving, retrieving, barking, posing, parading, and probably a few happy zoomies. The official event site says the festival includes more than 25 fun activities, including DockDogs®, disc dog competitions, wiener dog races, a pet parade, costume contests, doggie fun runs, a pet marketplace, and more.
In other words: if your dog has ever believed they were born for greatness, this is their moment.
Visitors can watch athletic dogs launch themselves into pools during dock-diving competitions, cheer on dachshunds in the always-adorable wiener dog races, stroll through vendor areas, or simply enjoy the sight of happy dogs everywhere. It is part sports event, part community festival, part pet expo, and part “how did that tiny dog run that fast?” entertainment.
The Events Are the Real Treat
One of the best parts of Frankenmuth Dog Bowl is the variety. Some events are competitive. Some are educational. Some are just delightfully silly.
The 2026 schedule includes the Pet Parade, Best Canine Costume Contest, Dog Breeds of the World Show, Police K9 Demonstration, Border Collie Sheep Herding Demonstration, Rock N Roll K9s Performance Team, Sniff ’n Seek, Dog Lure Course, 25 Yard Small Doggie Fun Run, and 50 Yard Big Doggie Fun Run.

And then there is the crowd favorite: the Wiener Dog Races, held Saturday and Sunday at 5 p.m. If you have never watched dachshunds sprint with absolute determination while a crowd loses its collective mind, you have not fully experienced festival joy.
Yes, There’s a Dog-Friendly River Cruise
Because apparently Frankenmuth looked at a regular dog festival and said, “You know what this needs? A boat.”
The Annual Canine Cruise on the Cass River returns during the 2026 festival aboard the Bavarian Belle historic paddleboat. Pets are welcome and encouraged, and each cruise lasts about 45 minutes with narrated Frankenmuth history and plenty of photo opportunities with your pup. Proceeds support Frankenmuth Dog Bowl Inc., a nonprofit focused on responsible pet ownership and educational programs.
That means your dog can go home and casually tell the neighborhood, “Oh, I summered on the river.”
Don’t Miss the Hot Air Balloons
As if the dogs were not enough, the weekend also includes Balloons Over Bavarian Inn. Visitors can watch morning and evening balloon flights, plus nighttime balloon glows at the Frankenmuth Credit Union Event Field behind River Place Shops. The official site notes that the balloon glow features more than a dozen tethered hot air balloons, creating one of the most colorful and photo-worthy moments of the weekend.

So yes, you can spend your day watching dogs leap through the air and your evening watching hot air balloons light up the sky.
That is a pretty strong weekend itinerary.
It’s Free to Attend
One of the biggest perks? Frankenmuth Dog Bowl is free to attend. Some activities may have registration fees, and visitors may want to shop the Pet Marketplace or purchase extras, but there is no admission fee to come watch the fun. Dogs are welcome and encouraged, as long as they are up to date on vaccinations and kept on a leash.
Parking is also free, with parking available at River Place Shops, along Weiss Street near Heritage Park, and throughout downtown Frankenmuth. Handicap parking is available on the south side of River Place Shops.
A Few Helpful Tips Before You Go
Bring water for yourself and your dog, comfortable shoes, waste bags, and a leash that keeps your pup close in crowds. If your dog gets overwhelmed by noise, other dogs, or big crowds, it may be better to visit during quieter parts of the day or enjoy the festival as a human-only outing.
Also, check pet-friendly dining options before you go. The official Dog Bowl planning page notes that dining choices marked with a dog paw are pet-friendly, while animals are not allowed inside shops that serve food items except for service animals because of health safety standards.
Frankenmuth Dog Bowl is more than a fun weekend for pet lovers. It is also a smart example of small-town tourism done well.
The event combines local charm, family fun, pets, shopping, entertainment, food, and downtown energy into one memorable experience. It gives people a reason to visit, stay longer, take photos, bring friends, and come back year after year.
That is the magic of a great small-town festival: it does not just entertain people. It creates a story they want to share.
Plan Your Tail-Wagging Getaway
Whether you have a champion jumper, a costume-loving corgi, a river-cruising retriever, or a couch-loving pup who just wants snacks and attention, Frankenmuth Dog Bowl is a weekend worth circling on the calendar.
Come for the dogs. Stay for the balloons. Leave with a camera roll full of fur, fun, and festival memories.
And maybe bring an extra treat or two.
