Have a yearning for a refreshing Arps Dairy product or something more? There’s a perfect place in Defiance, Ohio. Arps Dairy Gift Shoppe has opened at 136 Fox Run Dr., Defiance. It is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Tina VanderMade, co-owner of Arps Dairy, said that the idea for a retail outlet for their products has been in the back of her and others' minds for a while. “That (idea) morphed into the gift shoppe,” she said. “I’m beyond thrilled with how well it’s turned out.” The shoppe opened June 2024.. Word of the retail outlet’s opening mostly has been spread by word of mouth so far. “I jokingly said if we get at least 5-10 people I would be thrilled,” VanderMade remarked. “We had around 100 people (the other day). I was super happy with the amount of people we had.” The retail outlet offers a range of Arps products and more. In addition to milk, the shop offers items including chip dip, cottage cheese and sour cream. Any soft serve mix products need to be ordered at least 24-hours ahead of time. “We have some other products that we don’t produce but our milk is in,” VanderMade explained. “We also will be having cheese curds and various other items.” One example of a product that Arps Milk goes in is Sanders Chocolates. The chocolates are another of the items sold at the shop. It’s just not food that is available. “We have Jelly Bellies to clothing and household decorations for walls. We have a little bit of everything out there,” VanderMade said. “We’ve got Arps sweatshirts and T-shirts. We will be getting thermos and insulated mugs.” With the changing of the seasons, there also will be special items. Arps Eggnog will be seasonal in the store, for example. “At Christmas time, we hope to do a package with chip dip, sour cream and more as a gift pack,” VanderMade added. While Arps Dairy is known for its locally-produced milk, other items in the new shop may also be local. “We do have a couple of local people who have reached out. We hope to have some of their products,” VanderMade said. “Our hope is that this will be a place you can come (and find something) for the person who has everything,” she added. One great trademark of Arps is the cow statue. While there is one located in front of the dairy’s current building at the corner of North Clinton and High Streets, a new one greets visitors to the gift shop. The cow statue at the shop is currently bright red. “The cow is not going to stay that color. We’re not sure yet what kind of skin we’ll give her – if we’ll run another competition like the one on Clinton Street,” VanderMade explained. The cow at the Clinton Street location will be staying there until after Arps Dairy moves completely to its new headquarters at the Fox Run building. “We hope to have everything moved out here in a year,” she said. Lessons Learned from One Encounter with Rev. Jesse Jackson (By Erika Willitzer – Executive Director of Defiance County Economic Development) Featured in the Crescent News I was 19 and working at The University of Akron’s Radio Station WZIP-FM. This next part is going to sound crazy, but it is true. It was at this rap radio station that I developed my love for news and politics. The station was visited by R & B Stars like Beastie Boys and Wu-Tang Clan. I didn’t get star struck by these rap groups, but I did get amped up covering stories for the station’s small news department. I got to cover news conferences and do interviews with Henry Kissinger, Collin Powell, Cokie Roberts, Hilary Clinton, and even former President Bill Clinton. One of the most memorable was covering Rev. Jesse Jackson’s news conference. I was excited, nervous, but more excited than anything. I remember so vividly getting to the news conference where I’m in a sea of reporters, some of which were from the major networks. The news conference was at 2 pm and it was going on 3:30 pm. Rev. Jesse Jackson finally comes in, says hello, and takes one question from the floor. He then says, “I have to leave.” My internal dialogue screamed inside. What? We have been waiting for over an hour and a half, and this pompous political leader can only take one question! The entire mob of news reporters made a quick sigh of disgust. And then, I did it. I screamed out in a deep voice, “Mr. Rev. Jackson. Sir. (I stated that loud and slowly) You stop right there. You talk this game of honor, and with all due respect, we all have been waiting to ask you questions. We were promised 30 minutes of your time, and as a man who says he keeps his word, you should!” Jackson stops dead in his tracks as he is about to exit. He then looks at me and says, “You are right!” I apologize, my next meeting will just have to wait. I AM A MAN of my word. Let’s start with you, young lady. What’s your question? Rev. Jackson stayed there talking and answering questions for over an hour. That year, I did receive several awards for my reporting, but the awards don’t mean much. It was an experience I’ll always cherish, along with these lessons: 1.) Not all politicians are pompous. They are just under extreme pressure, like many of us. 2.) It’s okay to take a stand for something, no matter your age. 3.) Also, always shoot for the stars! No matter where you are, continue to push yourself outside of the normal boundaries, because when you do, amazing things can happen. And if you are wondering, I don’t remember the exact question I asked the Reverend. I know it was race-tension related, but the lessons, I remembered were far more critical. I can learn a thing or two from my 19-year-old self. Now, in my 40’s, I still need to reflect on getting out of my comfort zone and pushing myself, just like I did when I was younger.

The death crawl scene remains a compelling metaphor for business leaders. If you need a pick me up or motivation, I’d advise watching this five-minute clip. Just search “Facing the Giants” – death crawl on YouTube. It’s worth watching!  Despite the reference to death, it gives you inspiration to LIVE, and the DESIRE to persevere. In the scene a football player carries a team member on his back across the length of a football field while blindfolded. His coach keeps screaming at him to keep going - to never give up. When the football player goes to a point his body gives out. He cries, thinking he failed, but his coach has him look up, and it is in that moment, the player realizes he is in the endzone. It's a test of physical endurance, yes, but more so, it's a testament to willpower, mental fortitude, and an unyielding sense of purpose. The City of Defiance was recently listed in the Top Ten Micropolitan List.
